Student Patrol

The Student Patrol Division, also known as Raider Escort, is an integral part of the Middle Tennessee State University community.  It consists of 10 Student Patrol members and serves over 22,000 students, faculty, staff and visitors to the MTSU campus.

Student Patrol is the “eyes and ears” of the Public Safety Department.  It is one of the most recognizable elements of the Department of Public Safety at MTSU  and can be easily identified by their uniforms . The majority of assignments are walking patrol beats.  Student Patrol members are committed to maintaining a safe learning environment for all MTSU students, while safeguarding the rights of the individual.  Student Patrol members assist the MTSU Police Officers in doing all types of tasks that free officers for their law enforcement mission. Student Patrol members play a vital role in providing safety awareness on campus through a variety of programs designed to educate the University community about safety issues and concerns.

The Student Patrol program enhances safety on campus and provides numerous other services which include:

High profile foot patrol.
“Eyes and ears”
Proactive patrols of University property and facilities throughout the night-time hours.
Observation of and reporting suspicious activities throughout campus.
Providing walking escorts from the outer parking lots to the residence halls during late night/early morning hours. The call boxes may be used for requesting an escort, as well as by contacting the Public Safety Communications Center at 898-2424.
Assist Police Officers in providing security at MTSU events and venues.
Checking and securing various academic buildings on campus as part of the Building Security unit. The Student Patrol unlocks the academic buildings in the early morning and secures the buildings every evening during the academic year.

While Student Patrol operations enhances the safety of the University community, it also allows an excellent opportunity for Student Patrol members to gain leadership experience and to impact safety issues while acting as a liaison between the Department of Public Safety and MTSU community. The nature of situations encountered by Student Patrol members necessitate developing critical thinking skills and conflict management skills, both of which provide experiential learning.

The Student Patrol also provides members with great experience for a future in law enforcement or other public service.  Former Student Patrol members serve in countless federal, state and local governmental and criminal justice agencies throughout the nation.

MTSU students who are in good standing with the Middle Tennessee State University, are US Citizens and are enrolled for at least nine hours of credit are encouraged to apply for a Student Patrol position. Successful applicants must pass an interview process and a criminal background check. Student Patrol positions are funded through departmental funding, but students qualifying for work study are also encouraged to apply
