Just as the weather begins to warm up, more and more students ride their bike to campus. Spring and summer are when most bike thefts occur. Bike theft is preventable however, with a little common sense.

Lock your bike every time you leave it, no matter where you are on campus or how long you intend to leave it. A bike thief only needs a few seconds. Many thefts on campus were those who were "only going to be in there a minute." More than 2/3 of the bike thefts on campus last year occurred near a dormitory.

Use a U-bolt style bike lock. They are the most effective. A thick chain lock is also good. Thin chain locks should not be used as a bike thief can quickly remove this type of lock.

Only use a university-provided bike rack to secure your bike. These racks are intentionally placed in maximum visibility areas. People in our university community know where many of these racks are and will report someone suspicious to us at 2424. Those who operate bikes on campus and lock their bikes on the racks tend to watch out for suspicious people around racks they frequent.

Never park your bike on a hand-railing. To park a bicycle and impede egress or ingress of a building is against state law and our department does issue citations for this offense.
