Crime Alert - August 6, 2008

UPDATE:

On August 6, 2008, an investigation by the MTSU Police determined that the physical assault reported yesterday (8/5/2008) as a "stranger assault" on campus was, in fact, an act of domestic violence (between known persons) that occurred in the City of Murfreesboro at the victim's residence. The suspect in this incident was found to be the victim's boyfriend. This case has been turned over to the Murfreesboro Police Department since the incident occurred in the City instead of on campus.

While this incident actually occurred off-campus, University Police still recommend that persons on campus always take proactive measures to remain safe. Please report all suspicious persons and events, use the University's Walking Escort Service on campus (by calling 898-2424), and contact University Police (898-2424) to report all criminal activities.

On August 5, 2008, a 24 year old white female non-student reported that she was struck in the head by an unknown white male subject while she was walking somewhere around the Womack Lane area on the MTSU campus. The physical confrontation reportedly took place sometime that day in the early morning hours after 12:30 A.M. The victim could give no description of her alleged assailant other than that he was a white male subject. The victim was unclear of additional details of the assault although there was no indication of a sexual assault attempt. There was also no known motive for the physical confrontation.

Extra precautions you should take:

·         Use the University Escort Service (call 2424).

·         Do not walk alone, especially at night.

·         Stay away from dark, poorly-lighted areas, especially buildings, parking lots, bushes, hedges, and alleys.

·         Do not walk with your head down. Walk confidently and watch around you at all times.

·         Never talk to strangers. Never accept rides from a stranger or mere acquaintance. Always inform another person about your destination and expected time of return. This could save your life.

·         If you have any information about this crime or any other crime, please call MTSU Department of Public Safety at (615)898-2424. Or you may call Crime Stoppers at (615)893-STOP between the hours of 8:00AM and 4:30PM, Monday through Friday.  Should you call Crime Stoppers and your information lead to an arrest, you may be eligible for an award of up to $1,000. All calls are anonymous and confidential.
