FREE Self-Defense/Awareness CLASS for Women

MTSU Officer David Smith, a certified Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) instructor, will begin a new RAD class for women Thursday, April 20, at the MTSU Police Department training room, located at 1412 East Main Street in Murfreesboro . It will be free of charge and open to the university students, faculty and staff and to the community-at-large. The class will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for six consecutive Thursdays.  Anyone who is interested in enrolling in the class should call Officer Smith at 615-494-8855. Please leave a name and number on voice mail for a prompt response.

Here are just some of the highlights:

  • RAD is not martial arts.  The Rape Aggression Defense system is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques.  The RAD system is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing to the basics of hands on defense training.
  • Safety Issues.  The class teaches some self-defense techniques, but it is designed to change women from having a victim mentality to a survivor mentality.  Traditionally in our society women have been taught to be submissive.
  • RAD presents several scenarios in which a woman can defend herself by reacting to a situation and by recognizing a possible threat to her safety.  Awareness and knowledge are the cornerstones of the RAD approach.
  • The beauty of the RAD system is that it teaches only self-defense techniques that have been proven to work.  We put students in simulation training where an aggressor dresses up in a padded suit, and we put the women in different situations to see how they react....  We tech them maximum effective targets on an aggressor and show them that we have enough strength to be effective.
  • Former RAD students include young women, senior citizens, even those with disabilities.
  • Students will be provided with a workbook/reference manual.

Anyone who is interested in enrolling in the class should call Officer Smith at 615-494-8855. Please leave a name and number on voice mail for a prompt response.
