Bridging Unlikeness: Poetry as Connection and Community
Featuring Kory Wells
The philosopher Martin Buber said, “Mankind’s great chance lies precisely in the unlikeness of men, in the unlikeness of their qualities and inclinations.” A poet’s work includes holding contrasts in small confines and exploring connections which may seem tenuous, even at odds. How do poets (ourselves included) write most effectively about the world as it is—and the world we wish for? How do we entice readers to relate to a poem—and challenge their assumptions? We’ll explore these questions and more by engaging with contemporary poems, experimenting with writing prompts, and practicing deeper attention to the world and each other.
About the Artist:
Kory Wells, is the author of two poetry collections, most recently Sugar Fix from Terrapin Books. Her writing has been featured on The Slowdown podcast from American Public Media and appears in Christian Science Monitor, The Strategic Poet, the Tennessee volume of The Southern Poetry Anthology, and numerous literary journals. In 2017 the longtime Murfreesboro resident was selected the city’s inaugural poet laureate, and she continues to nurture creative culture through leadership in arts advocacy and community events such as Poetry in the Boro and the Bloom Stage storytelling show.
