Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated was organized on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. during the 1907-1908 academic school year under the leadership of Ethel Hedgeman Lyle. She and 15 other phenomenal women joined together forming the 1st Greek-letter organization established by American women of color.

Alpha Kappa Alpha's development, consistent throughout the years, has focused on an emphasis of uplifting its membership standards of high scholastic standards, leadership development, and service to all mankind. Comprised of over 200,000 college-trained women from around the world, the determinations of our sorority resonate throughout the United States, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. The women of the Eta Psi chapter wish to communicate the spirit of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority through our current ESP program which focus on economic development, the strengthening of the black family, entrepreneurial growth, educational advancement through technology, and health management. In order to fulfill our important responsibilities, every sorority sister of the Eta Psi chapters pledges to communicate our sisterhood and dedication to being supreme in service to all mankind through perpetual execution of our civic and social responsibilities.

In the fall of 1971, enrollment of African-American students attending predominately white colleges and universities doubled. During the 1970's, there was an explosive pursuit of Black Greek letter organization interest groups on the campus of MTSU. Mrs. Stewart arrived on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University in 1971 and started the pink and green dream. On Nov. 6, 1972, Alpha Kappa Omega Sorority was founded as the official interest group for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Mrs. Mary Scales and Louvenia Webb assisted Mrs. Stewart in the chartering process at Middle Tennessee State University. In the fall of 1973, the dream became a reality. On Saturday, Oct. 27, 1973, sixteen ladies of Alpha Kappa Omega Sorority became official members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
