Delta Sigma Theta

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University. These students wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need. The first public act performed by the Delta Founders involved their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington D.C., March 1913. Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1930.

The Iota Tau Chapter was chartered on the night of January 19, 1973, by eleven visionary and dynamic collegiate young ladies. Among them were Carolyn Spurgeon, Middle Tennessee State University's first Black-American cheerleader and Pamela Woodbury, the university's first Black-American homecoming court member.

Since its establishment, Delta Sigma Theta has clearly established itself as a public service organization that strives to confront the problems of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. The members of the  Illustrious Iota Tau chapter continues this legacy by implementing programs that address education disparities, financial literary, international awareness, health disparities, and social injustices. All programs developed by the chapter are in accordance with Delta Sigma Theta Five-Point Program Thrust:

  • Educational Development
  • Economic Development
  • International Awareness and Involvement
  • Physical and Mental Health
  • Political Awareness and Involvement
