University Police Department
Raider Patrol

The Raider Patrol component of the MTSU Police Department consists of Middle Tennessee State University students who perform duties and functions as non-sworn, uniformed personnel. As part-time student employees, Raider Patrol members do not engage in law enforcement activities. Instead, they provide a visible presence on campus and perform a variety of duties that enhance the safety and security of the University community.
Members of Raider Patrol provide safety escorts for members of the campus community upon request. Escorts may be requested through the University Police Communications Center at 615-898-2424; from a campus phone, dial 2424. Call boxes may also be used to request an escort. Raider Patrol provides walking escorts on campus during evening and nighttime hours.
Raider Patrol also conducts proactive patrols of University property and facilities. Members perform foot patrols, serve as additional “eyes and ears” for the University Police Department, and observe and report suspicious activity throughout campus. They also check and secure the doors and windows of University buildings.
In addition to their regular patrol and building security duties, Raider Patrol assists the University Police Department with parking for events and performs other special assignments as needed. Through these activities, Raider Patrol is available to assist the campus community and University Police officers, and their presence throughout campus allows them to observe and report situations that require a police response.
While Raider Patrol operations enhance the safety of the University community, the program also provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain leadership experience and to impact safety issues while acting as a liaison between the University Police Department and the MTSU community. The nature of the situations encountered by Raider Patrol members necessitates the development of critical thinking, situational awareness, and communication skills, providing valuable experiential learning.
Raider Patrol also provides members with experience for a future in law enforcement or other public service. Former Raider Patrol members serve in federal, state, and local governmental and criminal justice agencies throughout the nation.
MTSU students interested in joining Raider Patrol must be U.S. citizens, have no criminal record, and, if applicable, have an honorable discharge from an armed force of the United States. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 semester hours during the spring and fall semesters and in at least 1 class during the summer session. Raider Patrol members must be willing to work at least 18 hours (three evenings) per week, including holidays and weekends. Students interested in working part-time as a member of Raider Patrol are invited and encouraged to apply by completing our online application.
